Loyalty
Loyalty takes a major role in this story. Hassan shows loyalty and devotion to everyone, especially Amir, As quoted "Hassan never denied me anything" in the beginning of the book. An example could be in chapter 8. In chapter 8 Amir and Hassan are sitting under a pomegranate tree when Amir asks Hassan what he would do if he threw a pomegranate at him. Then seconds later Amir begins pelting Hassan with pomegranates while yelling at Hassan telling him to hit him back. Hassan shows his loyalty to Amir when he refuses to hit Amir back. Another example would be in Chapter 9 when Amir steals his fathers watch, and some of his money and plants it under Hassan's mattress. When Amir's father Baba begins questioning Hassan on where the money and watch is, Hassan admits to stealing it even though he did not. Hassan lied to Baba so that Baba would not think less of Amir. Hassan shows his loyalty to Amir knowing that Amir is the one who planted the watch just to protect Baba, which is incredible. Amir was dumbfounded. He did not expect such extreme loyalty from Hassan, and in turn felt bad. How Baba treated Amir and Hassan would be considered an example of loyalty also. Baba raised Amir and Hassan with great affection and dispersed his love equally between the two even though Hassan was not his blood son. Even when Baba's son Amir asked him if he would replace Ali and Hassan, Baba refused and in turn became upset. Baba cared for Ali and Hassan very much. Amir did not like it, for he wanted to be the center of attention. Amir felt like he deserved more affection and attention then Ali and Hassan because Baba was his father, so Amir went out of his way to impress his father with himself, and make his father think less of Ali and Hassan.
